1940s

Here are some of the photos from my family album, all very typical of family life in the 1940s and 50s and they all evoke very fond memories. How life has changed, a lot of it for the better but not everything.

1960s

Making my way as a young cricketer with Yorkshire was not easy. Youngsters were not mollycoddled and it was a tough school but there were a lot of happy times; getting my second eleven cap and making my debut in the first team stand out. The pictures bring the memories flooding back.

1970s

Every cricketer’s ambition is to play for England and I was privileged to do so for 18 years. I can recall just about every minute of that first hundred and, of course, making my 100th century in front of my own crowd at Headingley. Another outstanding moment was going to Buckingham Palace to receive the OBE from Her Majesty. There wwere heartaches along the way, but that’s life.

first news article

First time in print -- and they spelled my name wrong! That was because the scorer (who sent the details in to the newspaper) was a Jeffrey and assumed everyone else was.

Yorkshire v Warwickshire innings chart Headingly 17th July 1982

This delightful diagram, of Boycott’s 152 not out v Warwickshire in 1982, was sent to GB by Anne Tunnicliffe of Chester. Her letter explains everything: “ Dear Geoff, I enclose a chart of your innings against Warwickshire which should give you some idea of where you scored your runs. That is not to say you did not know exactly what you were doing! I hope you find it of interest and should also like to thank you for the entertainment you gave my husband and I on that day and indeed on many others. Unfortunately you had started your innings this morning before we arrived, but I wish you the best of luck for the rest of the day and for Wednesday, Yours, Anne Tunnicliffe”
